Rescues and Investigations

We were notified of some donkeys at North Kinangop, that are usually used for collecting milk from the dairy farmers and taking the milk to cooling plants. The donkeys are believed to be overworking. We went to investigate the matter, and cautioned the owners and users against overloading and whipping the donkeys, and mentioned the need to let the donkeys get proper rest.

In conjunction with Farming Systems Kenya, we conducted a donkey welfare campaign in Mah Maahiu. Our objective is to improve the state of the carts and harnesses. We also held an awareness meeting with the community donkey owners/users and veterinarians.

During our field work, we encountered a group of people offloading cattle from a pickup, meant to be taken to an abattoir at Nyondia. The manner in which they were doing it was inhumane; we cautioned them and demonstrated the best way to offload cattle.

We rushed to rescue the donkey pictured below that had been hit by a vehicle at Kenyatta Avenue, but unfortunately he died upon our arrival.

We rescued this malnourished puppy at Villaview Estate. The puppy is believed to have been abandoned by the owner for unknown treasons.

Our team went to investigate the state of the dogs at Mudason Dog Centre in Gilgil, after receiving reports of their health status. We educated the owners on the 5 animal freedoms, and we will be making regular follow-ups to ensure the dogs are okay.

In other news…

We had a sterilization campaign week with Dr James and managed to sterilize 8 dogs and 4 cats. We then held meetings with the CDVS of Baringo and Nyandarua Counties and discussed about how best to manage the population of stray animals in the said regions, as well as humane slaughter in abattoirs. We are currently providing shelter to 45 dogs, 18 cats and 2 donkeys.
