KSPCA Mombasa (October)

Animals:  We had quite a busy month besides all the dogs and cats that we admitted and rehomed. We had a total of 23 dogs and 56 cats admitted, and re-homed 12 dogs and 13 cats. We also took in 10 donkeys – 5 adults and 5 foals of various ages.  The KSPCA Animal Welfare Officer, Ian, came with three other experts in handling donkeys. Without them we certainly could not have managed; we are very grateful to them. The County Vets organized the re-homing through the vets in charge of Kwale and Kilifi Counties who vetted the recipients of the donkeys. The adults were all vaccinated against rabies and tetanus, and were also dewormed. No cases of rabies were reported.

Finances: At the beginning of October we had a very successful Golf Fund Raising Event up at Vipingo Ridge. This was to celebrate 50 years of the Tamarind and in Memory of Chris Seex. We managed to raise Ksh. 720,000 but there is still some more money to come in. Pauline McKenzie put on a very successful Charity Goat Derby for the EAWL and  the KSPCA will be receiving some funds from that event. Mike Kirkland of Southern Cross Safari very kindly put on an air-conditioned 22 seater bus for people to go down to Diani for the Annual Charity Goat Derby. Our next fund raising event is our Annual Christmas Craft Fair and this is being held on the 19th November as usual at the Bahari Beach Hotel.

Premises:  We have been having endless power problems at the premises. Our computers are also giving us a hard time- any donations will be much appreciated! We have also had problems with the pump for our underground storage tank, but this has been sorted.

We inspected 3 abattoirs in the Coast and they were all in good shape.
