The Covid Challenge
The COVID-19 pandemic has had a devastating impact on the economy, particularly people in under-privileged areas. In many cases family incomes have been severely affected. As people find it harder to make ends meet, they have had to make difficult choices, resulting in some families struggling to feed their pets.
As this pandemic progresses, our resources are stretched to their limits as we endeavor to rehabilitate the animals that are under our care. Meeting and movement restriction have unfortunately meant we have had to postpone many of our fundraising activities, adding further strain to an already incredibly challenging situation.
KSPCA staff have been on the ground ensuring that all animals at our shelters are well looked after. In addition, we have continued rescuing animals subjected to cruelty, hunger and abandonment. Our staff are dealing with a steep rise in cases of neglect as pet owners have to provide the due care and attention needed for their pets.
Our Field Inspectors have had reports of animals left deserted in forests, as well as private homes, at times even locked in their kennels with no access to food and water. These animals have been rescued, brought to our shelters, rehabilitated, socialized and re-integrated into forever homes by KSPCA. To help break the cycle of more pets being brought into this situation, we have utilized this time to intensify spay and neuter campaigns in under-privileged areas for both dogs and cats.
At the KSPCA shelter, we currently have around 140 dogs, 75 cats and 7 donkeys. Our priority is, and always will be, helping animals in need. As the situation around COVID-19 continues to unfold, we remain committed to doing everything that we can to rescue and care for needy animals. Our team strives to carry on with their vital work.
