The KSPCA is devoted to the welfare of donkeys in Kenya. We are always looking at new ways to help improve the welfare of donkeys throughout the country.
In October, we visited Uasin-Gishu, Trans Nzoia and Bungoma Counties to assess the welfare of the donkeys. The most common issues of concern were overloading, poor harness fitting, heavy & unbalanced carts, and drunk users. About 30 donkeys in Trans Nzoia were in a bad state.
We intervened by releasing some donkeys from the carts, and with the help of the local police we arrested 2 donkey owners who were taken to the police station.
Along the Kitale-Lodwar road, we encountered an overloaded donkey. The donkey could barely see properly while walking. We removed the donkey from the cart and instructed the user to have the donkey carry the loads in smaller quantities.
We practically improved over 30 working donkeys.
