Adopt a Pet from the KSPCA (re-homing)

What is re-homing?

Stray or abandoned animals found roaming the streets, or animals left to fend for themselves when owners move house and leave them behind, make up most of the population of dogs and cats in our shelter.

Any animals thus found are kept at the KSPCA for a period of one month. This period is a sort of quarantine period to;

  • Assess the behavior of the animal so that a suitable home can be found. For example an overtly aggressive dog may not do well in a household with small children or other companion animals.
  •  Ensure that the animal is healthy and free of disease, especially zoonotic diseases such as ringworm, scabies and even observed for a month for signs of rabies.
  • Other common conditions such as tick fever, cuts, wounds, abscesses and anything else is also treated prior to re-homing.
  • The animals are de-wormed and vaccinated for rabies and the other appropriate cat or dog vaccines.
  • If emaciated and weak they may be kept longer and fed 3-4 times a day until they are stronger and closer to their optimal body weight before re-homing.
  • Some animals are traumatized from the way they were kept by their previous owners. For example if they were kept locked up for long periods without exercise or company. These will need socializing before re-homing so that both the animal and the new owner are comfortable with each other.

Re-homing procedure

When someone comes to the KSPCA looking for a cat or a dog they are taken around the catteries or kennels to select what they may like. They are then advised to spend some time with the animal, especially if it is a dog they are interested in. They can walk around with the dog or play in a designated area and see if they are compatible. This is extremely important if the new home for the dog has small children.

Before re-homing:

  • All animals are vaccinated for rabies.
  • Dogs are given the DHLPPi vaccine (Distemper,Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, Parvo and Para influenza).
  • Cats are vaccinated with the feline triple vaccine(Feline Herpes virus, feline calici virus and Feline enteritis).
  • De-wormed for hookworms, roundworms and tapeworms.
  • All ectoparasites removed with either frontline spray or an appropriate acaricide wash.
  • All cats are neutered before re – homing and any kittens, (usually 14-16 weeks of age) are booked to be brought in for neutering 8-10weeks after they leave the KSPCA.
  • All female dogs are neutered. Female puppies, that are re – homed at 12-16 weeks of age are followed up for neutering as soon as they are old enough.
  • We strongly encourage new owners to also have male dogs adopted from the KSPCA neutered. We would like to be able to neuter ALL animals re – homed from the KSPCA.
