BumbleBee Blog Update

Bumble Bee BumbleBee is the first of our “bloggers” & will keep you up to date on her progress when we can persuade her!

BumbleBee was seized from a dealer in Loresho who was selling her. She is totally deaf & has only a tiny amount of sight & initially was due for humane euthanasia.

”After a de-fleeing & worming session when I arrived, I am starting to put on weight & feel like a puppy again! I am learning to play & follow a stick when taken for a walk which is really fun! I am looking for a very special home with someone who has the time to give me the attention & training I need owing to my special needs. If you can offer me a special home, please contact the KSPCA!”

We rescue many animals, all who need loving homes, including adults. Please do not buy from the streets!

Jean is awarded an MBE!

Jean Gilchrist

Jean Gillchrist has been with the KSPCA for over 20 years & has gained a reputation throughout Kenya as simply 'the woman who loves animals'! This reputation is well earned as many of us have found out. A simple trip down the road with Jean usually results in whiplash from violent breaking of the vehicle followed by jaw dropping admiration as she leaps from the car to deal with whatever animal/situation has caught her eye.

We are delighted that this year, the Queen of England awarded her an MBE (Member of the British Empire) in recognition of all her work towards building the KSPCA up from a tiny operation of 3 people to the great success it is today. She is tireless and dedicated towards working with the people of Kenya, educating, leading and encouraging them to treat animals with the respect deserved of any workforce a well as running the rescue & homing operations of this ever growing organization.

Struggle though we will, we will ensure that Jean leave’s her beloved KSPCA and goes to England to be awarded it!

KSPCA's Wycliffe Gwatemba on ' Donkey Work'

Wycliffe Gwatemba

We are currently doing Donkey Field Days where we talk to donkey owners/users about the animal welfare five freedoms.

These are:

  • Freedom from pain, diseases & injury
  • Freedom from hunger & thirst
  • Freedom from fear & distress
  • Freedom to express normal behaviors
  • Freedom from discomfort

We also help them in improving their harnesses by padding neck strap, breast band, breech & saddle. Donkey carts with short shafts are modified to fit harnesses well thus causing less injuries to donkeys.

Our team includes vets who treat donkeys that are sick and advise owners on better management. Donkey users & owners are given information on how to be kind to their donkeys, hoof trimming & how to make a good shelter.

The communities we work with are cooperative & listen to new ideas.

The biggest challenge is getting the right harness & donkey cart that is locally available & affordable to the community.

Riding for the disabled

Meet Spike – one of seven horses and twenty goats rescued from a one acre plot. Spike was adopted by the Riding for the Disabled – an arm of the RDA UK. Spike was broken in and trained by the RDA and now brings much joy to the children with special needs that ride him. Click on the logo to learn more:

Michael and Dog

Noni our vet, Michael, Dog
and Michael's father

There is a misconception that the KSPCA only does rehoming.  As many who work with us know this is not the case...

Meet Michael and Dog.  Michael is 6 years old and lives on the edges of the Kibera slum in Nairobi and Dog is his 2 year old pet.

We received a call of a dog that had been snared in a barbed wire fence and had been there for 2 days.  At the time we were unaware that Dog belonged to anyone and our investigator went out on the rescue.

Having cut Dog out of the fence it was realized that his back leg was so damaged it had to be removed so he was taken back to the KSPCA and the operation undertaken by Noni – our vet.

Through kind neighbours, Michael found out what had happened to Dog and his parents contacted us to let.  Michael and Dog were reunited and he came to visit Dog during his recovery period.

Dog is now back at home with Michael and we at the KSPCA are delighted!
